Covid-19 Response
DIY Face Mask
In times of crisis, we can all step up in our own ways. During the Covid-19 Pandemic I was fortunate to be in the center of a large Venn diagram, and collaborated with many people to produce this design. This mask was designed to be deliberately more complex than others circulating on the internet during that time. It was created to provide a more secure fit to improve safety and incorporated a filter pocket to enhance efficacy.
As we faced something we could have never imagined and health care systems were overrun, there was a call on community solutions. I’m thankful I got to be a part of that call and step up to help the community be prepared. Ideally enough masks would have been available for all who needed them, and this design would have never been used, but due to global shortages that wasn’t the case. My design was featured by the University of Minnesota and the Star Tribune. It was the feature in the University’s article ‘DIY face masks during COVID-19’ where it received over 1 million unique visitors in the first month, making it one of the best read stories of all time at the University.
